Before your child’s first day at nursery you will have been given some settling in sessions. These are usually stretched over one or two weeks.
A sample settling in timetable could look something like this:
Monday: 9.30 – 10.30am
Tuesday: 9.30 – 11.00am
Wednesday: 9.30 – 12.30pm
Thursday: 9.30 – 2.30pm
Friday: 9.30 – 4.30pm
During the first session you will meet your child’s key person. The key person is usually allocated prior to you starting at the nursery to ensure that your child has a friendly face to greet them and spend time with them. You can also read more about the role of the key person. Usually parents will stay with their child for the entire first session. We use this time for you to complete the registration forms and for your key person to chat with you about your child’s development.
During the second session the parent usually stays for a little while before saying “bye” for the first time. We usually keep this period short and you are welcome to pop upstairs for tea or coffee or wait outside if you prefer. Although some children may become upset when you say bye it’s important to do so and not “vanish” from the room like it is practised in other settings. This will make your child feel very insecure as they don’t know where you have gone.
Rest of the Week
During the rest of the week, we slowly increase the amount of time your child spends with us. We will regularly update you via telephone or email and you are more than welcome to call us at any time.
These settling in sessions are designed to give you and your child an introduction to the nursery and the process will continue for a few weeks after your child has started with us.
